Common Reasons a QR Code Will Not Scan

QR decoding depends on clean geometry and enough contrast for the reader to separate square modules. A code may look recognizable to a person while still lacking the detail needed for a decoder.

• Blur or low resolution merges neighboring modules.
• Cropping removes part of the code or its quiet zone.
• Glare, shadows, or low contrast hide the pattern.
• Perspective distortion turns the square into a steep trapezoid.
• Damage, overlays, or heavy compression alter too many modules.
• The code occupies too few pixels in the image.

Fix an Image Scan

Return to the original file when possible. Crop away unrelated background while leaving the full light border. Avoid repeatedly saving a JPEG, because each generation can introduce more artifacts. If a code is embedded in a document, export or capture it at a higher zoom level.

1. Confirm that all four edges and three corner markers are visible.
2. Try the unedited original or a sharper screenshot.
3. Increase contrast only if it does not destroy small modules.
4. Retry with PNG when you control the export format.

Fix a Camera Scan

Move the camera rather than holding it extremely close. Wait for focus, improve lighting, and angle glossy material away from reflections. A flashlight control appears only on devices that expose it reliably. If the printed code is too small or damaged, a sharp still photo may work better, but no decoder can recover information that is genuinely missing.
